Littering

Motorists need to beware when traveling down the roadway for litter and debris. Littering not only defaces the highway but it can cause a bad accident which could possibly lead to a serious injury or death. One thing most motorists can appreciate is the fact we don’t like to ride around with the car looking like a full trash can. For those with a different set of standards, they can tolerate the smell, trash is just something a collector likes do, but when enough litter starts flying out of a vehicle while it’s in motion, it’s known as debris.

Debris can kill or injure motorists. Think about a dump truck or an 18 wheeler that has a blown tire. That tire can be very dangerous for other motorists; it could bounce and hit the windshield of the following vehicle causing a multiple car crash and a bad chain reaction.

The defensive driving course, Comedy Driving, encourages motorists to research local liter laws to avoid confusion and a penalty that may be very costly. A simple Starburst wrapper that costs $1 may lead to a ticket that will now cost you over $200. Some states have laws that have financial penalties that go all the way up to $2000. What would cost $2,000? Anything big like a mattress, refrigerator, tires, or couches. Believe it or not, there are those out there that load their vehicles with a whole household worth of junk, tie everything down securely using some shoestring, wonder off to an empty highway covertly, and dump all of their junk on the highway.

Monetary fines range from state to state but if one state has higher penalties it might have cleaner roadways compared to a state where the fine is low. The roadways may be dirtier due to the cost it takes to clean-up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states more than eight hundred motorists are killed each year in litter or debris collisions. Let’s try our best to keep the roadways clean, safe, and clear; throw trash away in the trash can!
